Poem in Your Pocket Day and WGN News Highlight

We love poetry at OMS!  Our LMC staff organized a whole school celebration of Poem In Your Pocket Day on Friday, April 29.  Thanks to the generous support from our PTA, we were able to enjoy a visit by Bill Buczinsky, poet and performer.  He entertained our students by teaching them about the rhythm of poetry as well as the language.  Our students loved acting out, reciting, and writing poetry with Mr. Buczinsky's help. He taught Mrs. Beck's class and Mrs. Molnar's class how to read their poetry with expression and how to get ideas for poetry.  To prepare for the day-long celebration, every student had copied down a favorite poem or written his/her own poem. During three poetry breaks, classes got together to share and trade their poetry from their pockets.  WGN news reporter, Amy Rutledge, visited Olive with her cameraman to film Bill Buczinsky performing and teaching poetry to students.  The feature segment aired on May 4 on the evening news.  It was definitely a day to share our interest in poetry with each other!
