Makers - WANTED!

We are ALL Makers!  Mrs. Nelson and Mrs. Watanuki have been excitedly learning about the transformative Maker Movement in education. This philosophy stems from the belief that each and every person has the power to innovate and create. As we move toward offering more Maker experiences to our OMS students, we recognize that the success of our Maker activities begins with students seeing themselves as Makers.

Here's where we need your help, parents. Snap a photo ( or send a photo you have) of your child and something, ANYTHING, he or she has made and e-mail it to swatanuki@sd25.org. Think crafts, play-doh creations, forts, cakes, Lego creations, art, tinker toy buildings, imaginary lands for ponies or action figures, or inventions. We will use these photos to create a bulletin board featuring Olive Makers. Hard copies of photos can be sent in, but will not be returned.

Please send photos by Wednesday, April 1,2015.

Mindset Book Discussion

Thank you to those who were able to join us for a discussion on the book Mindset by Dr. Carol Dweck at the Principals' Coffee last Friday. Dr. Dweck contends that it is not our innate ability that determines our success; but, in fact, our mindset. People, elementary school children included, tend to display either a Fixed Mindset or a Growth Mindset. Those with a Fixed Mindset see themselves as having a set group of traits and abilities and may shy away from challenge as a way to "protect" their special status as "smart" or "athletic" or " musical", On the other hand, those with a Growth Mindset see their current level of ability as merely a starting point and recognize that through effort intellect and abilities can grow and develop. People with a Growth Mindset are up for a challenge and see effort as necessary for success. On the contrary, those with a Fixed Mindset often see the need to put forth significant effort as a sign of deficit. Interested in learning a little more about Mindsets? Take a look at the short video clips below.
