OMS Curriculum Night 9.2.15

We have had a wonderful start to the 2015-2016 school year and look forward to working collaboratively with you to ensure that your child experiences great success this year. It was wonderful to see so many of you during the Ice Cream Social/Meet & Greet event. Thank you to all of the volunteers that helped to organize such a wonderful evening!

Our next OMS community gathering will be our Parent Curriculum Night on Wednesday, September 2, 2015, from 6:30-8:30 pm. This is a great opportunity for parents to learn about their child’s classroom procedures and curriculum. This evening is for parents only and will follow the schedule of presentations below, so please arrive promptly for each session.

As you might expect, with all of our families invited to our Parent Curriculum Night, parking will be very limited. We will have our school lot available, in addition to the Orchard Church parking lot. If possible, please carpool or walk.

We look forward to seeing you on Wednesday, September 2nd!

Regards,

Becky FitzPatrick

Meet and Greet/PTA Fair

Thank you to everyone who came out to the Meet and Greet and the PTA Fair, it was a great success! A special thanks to Rachael Hooker and all of the Meet and Greet volunteers. Thank you also to the Committee chairs and clubs that hosted tables, it was a fun way to learn about all that Olive has to offer.

Spirit Wear Sale

Olive PTA Spirit Wear Sale begins today and runs through September 18th. There are a lot of items to choose from! Be sure to visit our online store. Orders will be taken online only and your items will be delivered to your child's classroom early-mid October. Samples will be on display in the OMS Commons and also at Curriculum Night (September 2nd). Please click here for our product descriptions. For more information, please contact Sarah Klancnik or Jolinta Voelker.

Character Counts Corner

We kicked off a full year of Character Counts initiatives by including an optional donation to nokidhungry.org at the Ice Cream Social. We are pleased to announce that we raised money to provide 1,700 meals to the 1 in 5 U.S. children who do not receive adequate food. This month we chose kindness! Each month we target one of the pillars of good character: kind, responsible, respectful, trustworthy, fair, caring and a good citizen. Stay tuned for more information on this exciting pilot program at OMS!

Bike Rodeo

Attention 3rd, 4th, and 5th Graders! The Bike Rodeo, being held on September 8th after school, consists of a short bike safety presentation from the A. H. police department followed by skill stations located in the loading zone. Participation is a requirement for all 3rd graders (and 4th and 5th graders who have not participated in the past) to be allowed to ride their bike to school without adult supervision. The Bike Rodeo permission slip and Helmet Fitting Guide can be accessed through this link.  The permission slip is due by September 4 in the children's classrooms.  Please ensure that your child's helmet is properly fitted prior to the Bike Rodeo.

Curriculum Night

Save the Date!! Olive's Curriculum night is September 2nd from 6:30-8:30.  This is a parent only event, please make other arrangements for your children. This event allows our teachers the opportunity to share with parents what your children will be learning this year and their strategies for accomplishing that goal. Please plan on attending.

Drop off and Pick up

As you have already seen, drop off and pick up is a little different this year due to our construction. Please refer to this map and procedure guide for explanations on how things work this year.

Parent Patrol

We need your help to keep things running smoothly at Drop Off. Please consider volunteering for Parent Patrol from 8:40-9:05 two times a month.  We provide you with an orange vest, you provide the smile!  Here is the link to sign up.

Arrival/Dismissal Update

Olive Families,

As many of you know we are continually working to improve our loading zone procedures to ensure the safety of our Olive Community.

After a recent consultation with the Arlington Heights Police Department we have discovered the need to limit the foot traffic on the sidewalk that runs along Olive Street and the Loading Zone, which crosses the entrance/exit for vehicles. We are thankful that so many families are walking their children to school and the amount of vehicle traffic has been at a minimum, but know that this will change later in the year.

We are asking all families that need to walk west before school and east after school to follow the sidewalk that runs the length of our field/blacktop or to cross at the cross walks and walk along the north side of Olive Street.  The exception to this would be those families that have legally parked their vehicles along Olive Street, between the parking sign and driveway.

We appreciate this means a few extra steps, but feel this will improve safety for our Olive students and families.  We could not undergo this massive construction project without the support and collaboration of all of you. Thank you for your support!

First Day of School

First Day of School

First we would like to thank our parent community for being patient with us as we work out the kinks during our drop-off and pick-up routines.  We know that this is a big adjustment for everyone, and we appreciate your ability to roll with the punches with us.  We continue to think of ways to improve our procedures to ensure that we keep our students well-being and safety as our number one priority.

This morning the students spent time in their classes unpacking supplies and getting to know one another before they joined Mrs. FitzPatrick and I in the Commons for our first assembly.  During our assembly we reviewed a few school-wide expectations including what H.O.O.T. stands for!  We also introduced all of our OMS staff members to the tune of the Blackhawks goal song!  We wrapped up learning about how recess will look a little different this year.  Check out our selfie below!

Today was an excellent first day!  We look forward to seeing everyone tomorrow!
