Read with Us!

One Book One School Event Starts October 2!
The whole school community (families and staff of OMS) will begin reading A Nest For Celeste on October 2. A paperback copy of the book was sent home today with the youngest child in each family. Enclosed within the book is a packet that includes the reading schedule and letters explaining how the program will work and how to send in photos of your children and families reading. The official start day for reading the book will be October 2, but if you are excited to start, of course, you may begin this weekend. Please try not to read beyond the pages designated for Week 1. We plan to discuss and celebrate this book at OMS over the next five weeks. Author/Illustrator, Henry Cole, will spend the day with us on November 10.

Mrs. Brown, the LMC Director, introduced students to the One Book One School program at an all-school assembly at the end of the day on Friday. Here is a copy of the presentation: https://goo.gl/zjzi3q

If you would like more information about the One Book One School program, please visit the LMC website: http://olivemarystittlmc.weebly.com/
There, you will find links to discussion questions, the reading schedule and more. OMS staff members and other district employees and administrators, as well as former Olive students, and even the mayor of Arlington Heights have recorded their voices reading each chapter of A Nest For Celeste. So, if you find that you don’t have time to read some of the chapters as a family, please help your child visit the LMC website in order to listen to the chapters being read aloud. If you have any additional questions about the program, please contact Mrs. Brown at nabrown@sd25.org.

Here is a statement by Jesse White, Secretary of State and State Librarian of Illinois about the importance of family reading time:

“Time spent reading together is one of the most valuable gifts a family can share because early reading sets young people on the path to lifelong learning.”

One Book, One School

We are excited to announce that the One Book One School program will begin on Monday, October 2. Families are invited to read the book A Nest For Celeste together during the month of October. We are very grateful to our PTA for generously purchasing a paperback copy of the book for each family. The books are being sent home with the youngest child of each family on Friday, September 29. In addition, each family will receive a reading schedule and letters explaining the program that have been tucked inside each book. For more information about the program, please read the OMS Blog post for Friday, September 29 and visit the OMS LMC website: http://olivemarystittlmc.weebly.com/.

Yearbook - Now Available to Order

Olive-Mary Stitt is using TreeRing to make our yearbooks. Last year we made the switch to TreeRing for two reasons:
  • Custom Pages: Every student gets a one-of-a-kind printed copy of the yearbook, containing two free pages that they can customize with personal photos.
  • Buy a Book, Plant a Tree: TreeRing plants a tree in our school’s name whenever someone from our school purchases a yearbook. (And here’s a bonus: They print on recycled paper).
Our book this year will be forty-two pages, including the two free custom pages, printed fully in color. The cost is $13.00. Orders placed by September 30 receive a 15% discount.  October orders will receive a 10% discount.

In order to buy your book and start your custom pages, visit https://www.treering.com.  If you had a TreeRing account last year, you can use the same password to log into your account. Please add any new children that did not attend last year. If you do not have a TreeRing account from last year you will need to create one.  You’ll want to have our school passcode handy. That number is 1014636724843184.  Please purchase a yearbook for each child so they can each have a book to sign the last week of school.

We’re looking forward to a year full of great memories—and capturing them in the yearbook!

Please contact Kate Halley or Jeannie Glasstetter if you have questions.

P.S. If you run into any trouble at all while setting up your TreeRing account, they have a great support team. Please contact them at support@treering.com.

The Owl Way Salutes our Community Helpers

The Owl Way formerly known as Character Counts, kicked off September with a Salute to our Community Helpers. This program promotes good character and kindness at all grade levels. The Owl Way implements monthly service initiatives to promote good character traits such as being kind, responsible, honest, fair and helping others. On occasion, this PTA program partners with other clubs such as the Ecology Club and the 5th Grade Service Learning Club, to carry out monthly projects with the help of students, parents and staff. The Owl Way fosters a positive learning environment and breeds a culture of kindness. OMS has a strong tradition of raising global-minded students and is committed to fostering a passion for service learning in tomorrow’s leaders. Click here to see a video.

Help OMS Parents Stay Informed on District Happenings

The OMS PTA used to have a SD25 School Board Rep, someone who would go to each of the SD25 School Board Meetings and then report back to the PTA.  We've been unable to fill that position and we are trying something new this year by allowing anyone to sign up to attend a single School Board Meeting and report back to the PTA with an email summary of what was discussed.  Please consider signing up for a meeting.  This is an easy, low-commitment way to volunteer and help our school's community stay informed.  Sign up via Sign Up Genius here.
