Summer Reading

You probably already know that reading over the summer is important, but did you know that students who continue to read during the summer can grow one academic month, and those that don’t read could lose a month? If you need book recommendations from teachers or students, help finding a structure to help you build reading in to your child’s summer schedule, or incentive programs to motivate your child to pick up a book, check out the link below. “5 Ways to Avoid the Summer Reading Dip” provides links to incredible sites that will help you support your child’s summer reading as well as a list of recommended books from D25’s LMC Directors.
Happy reading this summer!

Mrs. Moore Recognized for 20 Years of Service!

At the School Board meeting last week, we had the honor of celebrating a milestone recognition for our Olive-Mary Stitt Social Worker, Mary Moore.  Mary has worked closely with the students of District #25 for 20 years of dedicated service.   She spent her first 13 years at Ivy Hill Elementary School and has spent the past seven years at Olive.  Prior to becoming a school social worker, Mary worked as a probation officer for seven years in the Cook County Juvenile Court System.  When Mary is not working with our students, she is spending time with her husband Kevin, and her two children Lauren and Alex.   2013 has been a great year of personal celebrations for Mary and her husband as they plan for the 2014 wedding of their daughter and celebrate the recent graduation of their son from the University of Illinois.  Mary has many fond memories of her 20 years in the district and looks forward to creating many more with the wonderful Olive staff and students!

Important End of Year Dates

Where has this year gone? We cannot believe that it is already approaching Memorial Day weekend. Please remember that there is no school for students on Friday, May 24th  and Monday, May 27th. On  Friday, the Olive staff will begin planning for the next school year and Monday is a non-attendance day in observance of Memorial Day. Other dates to remember include Friday, June 31st is our annual Field Day (rain date Monday, June 3rd).  Classroom teachers will be sending home more details about this exciting day, as it gets closer. Please remember to have your child dress appropriately for the weather and active games. Our last day of school is Wednesday, June 5th.   Remember, this year the last day of school is a full day.  Our students will be enjoying some end of the year activities, including an all school recognition assembly!

Thank you PTA Board
We want to send a special thank you to our 2012-13 PTA Board Members for their dedicated service this year!  We achieved so many great things together to benefit our very deserving students!  Thank you for all of your hard work!

Safety Reminder for Walkers
As the weather gets warmer we see more of our students walking to school.  We love this, but want to remind them of safe procedures for crossing streets.  Please talk to your children about always crossing the street in a crosswalk or where there is a crossing guard if possible.  If a crossing guard is not located at your intersection, please review with your children the traffic rules and patterns so that they clearly understand when cars are required to stop and when it is safe to cross busy streets.   It is always better to take a longer walk to school if it ensures a safer route!  Thank you to the many parents who are available to escort their children (as well as many neighborhood children) to school each day!

You Matter

At the beginning of the year, the OMS fifth grade classes designed buttons saying "I Matter" and on the back they wrote their teacher's email address.  These buttons were passed out in Arlington Heights and each person was told to continue to pass it along to someone who "matters".  A few days ago, Olive 5th Grade Teacher, Sue Dunlop, received an email from Brazil with a picture of one of her student's buttons - a great example of someone who 'Made their Mark'! So it goes without saying that no matter where you are in the world...YOU  MATTER!

Solar Awards

In the tradition of the Oscars, Olive was host to the Second Annual 3rd Grade Solar Awards on Friday, complete with a red carpet! To honor the solid efforts of our 3rd grade planet researchers, students voted on the speediest planet, most beautiful planet, wildest temperature, strangest atmosphere, most fascinating moons, and overall best planet. To find out which planets won, you’ll just have to check in with an Olive 3rd grader!

Construction on Belmont
Mr. Charles Romeo, a local home builder, has asked that we share with parents that a construction project will begin next week at 1224 Belmont.  This location is very near to our school and may impact the Belmont Cul-de-sac drop-off and pick-up.  Also please be very diligent in monitoring your children as they walk to school near this construction site and equipment.  If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Mr. Romeo at 847-624-0759.

Service Club Project Linus 2013

By:  Erin J.

During the month of April the Olive Service Learning Club met several times to create no-sew blankets for the Project Linus Foundation.  The Project Linus Foundation is a group of volunteers that work with hospitals across the country to provide hand-made blankets to children who are in the hospital.  The Olive blankets will be received by the Lutheran General Hospital Children's Wing.

All 35 members of the Service Learning Club shopped and chose their own favorite fleece fabrics and worked together to create soft works of art meant to make sick children feel more comfortable! We all had a great time making them and helping each other do the best work we can do. It was wonderful seeing all the blankets together being sent off to the hospital.

Assistant Principal for the day!

Mrs. Netzel's class was very happy that the Assistant Principal for the day, Owen,  declared that they should have an extra recess!

Mr. Assistant Principal has been busy making sure that our kindergartners are doing their best work in art class!!!

We had a great time reading to some classes!

And he had to make the tough decision to have indoor recess!

And more reading.....

Mr. Assistant Principal ended his busy day by taking a moment to write a thank you letter to all of the wonderful teachers at Olive who made his day so much fun!!!!!

Appreciating Our Staff!

If you were in the school at all this week, you may have noticed the many decorations up in the office in honor of Administrative Professionals’ Day. In the coming weeks, if you have the chance, please show your appreciation for our wonderful main office staff. Brenda and Judi go out of their way to help things run smoothly each and every day at Olive. They are the glue that holds us together!

Along those same lines, next week is Teacher Appreciation Week at Olive. Our PTA committee has a number of ways we can celebrate our staff, concluding with a staff appreciation luncheon on Friday. Please know that the homemade cards and pictures that your children share with our staff  are always the most treasured symbol of their appreciation.
