Happy Summer from Mrs. FitzPatrick

The last day of school is always such a whirlwind. Many families were here but I did not get a chance to say goodbye to all of you. Needless to say, it's very quiet in the hallways of OMS today.

Thank you so much for all of your support throughout the year, whether it was reviewing flashcards for a test or volunteering in our LMC, we greatly value the wonderful partnership we have with you!

Thank you for sharing your children with us. They bring us such joy. It is a privilege to be a part of the OMS community.

Wishing you peaceful days this summer!

Becky

A note from Ms. Davis

I honestly can't believe how fast this year flew by!  I continue to be grateful for my role in D25 as the Assistant Principal at Olive-Mary Stitt.  Thank you for a wonderful year two!  I can't believe this was only my second year.  I look forward to continuing to build relationships with the students and families at OMS.  Have a wonderful summer and I will see you in August!

Erin

2017-2018 School Year - Sneak Peak

*Meet & Greet*
Save the date! The Meet & Greet for next school year is scheduled for Friday, August 25, 2:20 - 3:20 pm. This is a great opportunity to meet your child's teacher, check out the classroom, and catch up with other OMS families. Additional details about the event will be shared via email in early August.

*Other New Events*
We are also looking forward to two new events next spring. We will be partnering with District 214 to plan a Senior Walk for former OMS students. It will be a great opportunity for our current students to recognize the accomplishments of OMS alumni.

Also in the spring of 2018, we will be partnering with the PTA to provide a World of Work program for our 5th-grade students. As noted in the Twig, the program will provide students a real-world work experience.

We are sure there will be more but wanted to give you a little peek at what's in store next year at the nest.

Last Day of School

On Friday, June 9th our Olive Owls celebrated their last day of school for the 2016-2017 school year. There were a lot of smiles and a few tears as students said goodbye to each other and to their teachers.

The day started out by recognizing our 5th graders who will be venturing off to middle school next year.  A highlight of the morning was a surprise, secretly arranged by our very own Mrs. FitzPatrick, to have a special appearance by Cardinal and Timmy the Timberwolf.  Students, parents, and even our staff members were shocked when they came out from behind the curtain dancing to "I like to move it, move it."

After the 5th-grade recognition ceremony, our entire school gathered for our final all-school assembly.  Students were recognized for participating in a variety of clubs throughout the year.  The assembly wrapped up with the students learning how many Hoot's had been earned during the school year.  Altogether our students earned 1,131 Hoots.  We honored the students with the most Hoots in each grade and gave a special round of applause to our top two HOOT earners, Jack P. (13 Hoots) and Bryce M. (14 Hoots)!  We are proud of all of our students for displaying Hoot behavior during the year.

After the assembly our students continued to celebrate the last day of school with a recess, all-school yearbook signing and participating in a morning or afternoon Bingo session with Mrs. FitzPatrick and Ms. Davis via our morning announcements video broadcast system.  Teachers stopped by to make a guest appearance as a Bingo caller!

Finally, our students in grade K through 4, lined up to form a tunnel to say goodbye to our 5th graders one last time.  Students, staff, and families gathered at the end of the day to watch as our OMS Owls leave the nest for the last time.

5th Grade Book Trailer Winners

Let’s celebrate our budding film producers here at Olive! All of our fifth graders participated in the District 25 Film Festival. Fifth graders across the district have been working hard this past month to create book trailers to advertise their favorite books.  They have been finding photos, writing text, and matching music to the theme of their books. Once the trailers were finished, they were submitted to the judges. The first step was to get chosen by the fifth graders at another school. Our partner school was Dryden. The fifth graders at Dryden chose the top 3 from each Olive class.  Those top 3 went on to the second step.  A committee of LMC directors chose the top video for the class.  The winning video in each fifth grade class was sent to the district office where a team of administrators watched the videos and chose the best 3 to represent the district.  We are so excited that one of the top 3 videos for the entire district was submitted by Olive fifth grader, Delaney M! Congratulations!

Here are the Olive runners-up and Oscar winners by class:
5-1 Oscar winner: Rob G. for Space Case
Runners up: Carly S. for Slob and Alexis G. for The Liberation of Gabriel King

5-2 Oscar winner: Anthony S. for Dark Life
Runners up: Ania K. for Pax and Isabel F. for Drizzle

You Planted a Tree!

TreeRing Corporation, in partnership with Trees for the Future, is proud to plant 618 trees in honor of Olive-Mary Stitt's yearbook purchases this year. This grove of trees is being planted by local families in countries devastated by deforestation and global climate change. These fast-growing, permanent trees protect fragile ecosystems and assure that families can continue to live in harmony with the natural resources of their lands. Each year these trees will replace many tons of pollution from the atmosphere with life giving oxygen. Yearbooks are coming home today. Enjoy! A big thank you goes out to our amazing yearbook co-chairs, Erika Eng & Megan Hill. They did a wonderful job putting the yearbook together.

Field Day was a Success

We are grateful to our gym teacher, Mrs. Pusateri, for organizing an amazing Field Day last week. Over fifty parents volunteered to help give our children an amazing day.  Special thanks go to Stacy Riggs for organizing all of the volunteers and helping us with this event.

5th Grade Breakfast

Thank you 5th Grade Committee for putting together such a memorable event for our 5th graders.  It was a perfect send off.  A great big round of applause for the team; Brenda Larson, Christina Perez, Michele Bozikis, Becky Hany, Carrie Loch, and Sherri Tader.

Camp Edwards Trip

The 5th Graders enjoyed a beautiful day at Camp Edwards on Tuesday. Thanks to the 5th Grade Committee & the 5th grade teachers that helped organize this amazing trip. They enjoyed many outdoor team building activities including an opportunity to zip line. We appreciate the help of all the parent volunteers that helped chaperone.

Cultural Arts Performance

Thank you for your support of the OMS PTA this year. It allowed the Cultural Arts Committee to offer "Where the Sidewalk Ends," a musical based on the poetry of Shel Silverstein, presented by the performers of American Eagle Productions of Chicago. All students enjoyed the musical on the morning of Wednesday May 31 as the actors became beloved characters from Silverstein's most beloved poems including Backward Bill, Sarah Sylvia Cynthia Stout, and the Giving Tree.  Special thanks to Christine Wellner and Becky Hany for chairing this PTA committee and bringing the arts to Olive. Click here for photos.

World of Work Comes to OMS Spring 2018

So excited to announce that "World of Work" comes to Olive-Mary Stitt next Spring 2018. The purpose of "World of Work" program is to provide the 5th grade students an opportunity for a “real world” work experience. This program would afford the 5th grade children to see the value of hard work in different business settings. It would also allow them a window into the many steps involved in career aspirations. We will partner with local businesses and companies for the children to job shadow a few hours. Children will learn about career paths, job requirements, education and the importance of goals. The program will include a introduction to resume writing, beginner interviewing skills and a brown bag business lunch. This program must have enough chaperones to take flight, consider volunteering for "World of Work" PTA Program spring 2018.
