Thank you to those who were able to join us for a discussion on the book Mindset by Dr. Carol Dweck at the Principals' Coffee last Friday. Dr. Dweck contends that it is not our innate ability that determines our success; but, in fact, our mindset. People, elementary school children included, tend to display either a Fixed Mindset or a Growth Mindset. Those with a Fixed Mindset see themselves as having a set group of traits and abilities and may shy away from challenge as a way to "protect" their special status as "smart" or "athletic" or " musical", On the other hand, those with a Growth Mindset see their current level of ability as merely a starting point and recognize that through effort intellect and abilities can grow and develop. People with a Growth Mindset are up for a challenge and see effort as necessary for success. On the contrary, those with a Fixed Mindset often see the need to put forth significant effort as a sign of deficit. Interested in learning a little more about Mindsets?
