Construction Update 10.16.15

What is new at the corner of Olive & Douglas?
We have hired a new crossing guard to assist at this location. The district is currently interviewing candidates and hopes to have a crossing guard at Douglas and Oakton very soon.

Will there always be someone directing traffic and the entrance/exit to the drop-off/pick-up area?
Yes, we currently have an Arlington Heights police officer assisting us. In the coming weeks, the police department will be training a traffic/crossing guard to assist us for the remainder of the year.

Why are there "No crossing signs" along Olive Street?
We have received many reports of parents and students crossing in the middle of Olive Street to get to parked cars in the N. Pine Avenue cul-de-sac. Olive Street during drop-off and pick-up is very busy. If you need to cross the street, please do so with our crossing guard. Please also remember that our students are watching what all of us do. If parents cross in the middle of the road, it becomes very difficult to tell our students not to do so.

Why do I have to cross the street so many times at the intersection of Arlington Heights Road and Olive Street?
To ensure everyone's safety at this busy intersection, we ask that all students and families only cross with the crossing guard. Though this may result in some students crossing Olive with the crossing guard at Arlington Heights Road and then again at the main entrance of the school, it is the safest solution for this school year. We appreciate this may take an extra few minutes but hope that everyone understands the need to be safe.

Why can't the sidewalks in front of the construction entrances be opened during arrival and dismissal?
We could not guarantee that this construction entrance could be closed off to construction vehicles at certain times of the day.  Additionally, there may be some debris left at the construction entrance, and we prefer to keep students away from the area at all times. The vast majority of the construction traffic enters at Douglas, but some vehicles need to enter at the west side of the school to work on the classroom additions there.

What is happening with the playground equipment?

To make way for the new gym and to allow construction equipment into the site, all of our playground equipment is being removed. The district is salvaging as many parts as possible from the main playground and hopes to disassemble and then reinstall the equipment from the back playground. In the coming weeks, we will get input from students, staff and parents regarding new equipment for our main playground.
