Lunch Shift Change

Image result for change ahead

Monday, February 6th will be our official lunch shift change day. Students that had lunch at 12:10 PM for the first half of the year will eat at 12:40 PM and go out for recess first. Students that had lunch at 12:40 PM will eat at 12:10 PM and go out for recess afterwards. We are looking forward to this change and the opportunity for our students to experience the lunch period from a new perspective.  Students will continue to sit with their class at their assigned lunch tables.

Recess Supervisors Needed

Are you or someone you know looking for a way to get some fresh air and out of the house in the middle of the day?  We have just the position for you!  Join our team of recess supervisors.  OMS is in need of TWO recess supervisors to cover lunch recess.  Starting rate (per district website) $14.30 an hour.  The position is one hour a day 12:10 to 1:10 Monday - Friday.

**Please note we head outside unless it is raining or the temperature is below zero degrees.

If interested please contact Erin Davis, OMS Assistant Principal with the subject line recess supervisor at edavis@sd25.org and fill out the required forms at District 25 Employment.

We look forward to having YOU join our team!

Arrival/Dismissal Reminders

With the increasingly cold weather, we have had more families utilizing our drop-off and pick-up loading zone.  In order to maintain the safety of Olive-Us we ask that you please review our procedures and share them with anyone that may drop off or pick up your child.

*All students should be entering/exiting vehicles on the straight-away ONLY.  Please help us protect your child by not allowing them to exit the vehicle on or before the yellow curve.  We appreciate your help with this!  Did you know that even by waiting to enter the drop off zone all students make it into the building by 9:05?

*Students may begin arriving at 8:50 when there is supervised staff on duty.

*As students arrive we have designated waiting areas outside for each grade level.  This helps ensure the safety of students as they enter the building in an orderly manner.

*As soon as our teachers have completed their morning meetings and are in their supervision locations, the bell rings and the school doors open at 8:55 am. Teachers are then ready to greet students in the hallways near their classroom doors.

*Please be KIND to our staff that is outside in all types of weather making sure that you and your children are safe. Please also be respectful of fellow parents. If we ALL follow the procedures and understand it may take a few extra minutes to drop-off/pick-up your child from school, we can ensure our students have a great start to the day!

Reminder About Valentine's Day

Valentine's Day parties are scheduled in D25 elementary classrooms for Tuesday, February 14. Room reps should double check with their classroom teachers to verify the start time. If your child is passing out Valentine's Day cards to other students, the cards cannot have any candy or food attached to them. Trinkets such as pencils, erasers, stickers, etc. are great alternatives as long as they are not edible. Items such as goodie bags filled with treats or candy are also not permitted.  We greatly appreciate our room reps and volunteers who organize and provide fun Valentine's Day experiences for our students! Please stay tuned for more information from PTA room reps.

Holiday Story Time with the Principals

The risers are ready, the fireplace roars, waiting for students to walk through the doors.

Cozy and warm in pajamas was the plan, as children listened to stories about Yeti's and the GingerBread Man.

The children were focused their attention was held and when it came to coloring their glyphs they all excelled.

The principals enjoyed each grade level as one,
and wish each student and family a happy holiday vacation.

Students Love the New Floor Chairs in the LMC!

Students at OMS are excited to sit on the floor in comfort as they use the new floor chairs purchased for the school by the PTA.  These stackable chairs have cushioned seats and back support. Students feel like they are sitting in a theater as they receive instruction from Mrs. Brown or Mrs. Dufern in the library media center.  Because the chairs are lightweight, they can be carried around the room and set up in various spots as students sit together to work in small groups.  Thank you PTA!

Happy Winter Break!

Have a safe and wonderful break! Classes resume on Tuesday, January 3, 2017.

Character Counts - Look What's Been Happening

The results are in for our Warm the Nest event....356 coats & winter wear items for kids and 34 adult items! Our 5th Grade Service Learning Club worked like a well oiled machine over lunch Wednesday to count, sort & bag these items - give these owls a pat on the back for a job well done!

Our friends in District 59 (south Arlington Heights) were thrilled to stock their closet with the kids items due to very real & unmet needs within their district.  Interventionists within the District will be getting these items in the hands of children in our community who need them immediately. Journeys was grateful for the adult wear they received today too! This month perfectly illustrates how many hands working together can show OMS cares in a big way & we can make a real difference in Arlington Heights. Thanks for your support!

How are we doing? 5Essentials Survey

How are we doing? How does OMS rank according to the 5Essentials Survey? This is your chance to provide feedback!

Winter Recess

It is our practice to have the children go outside as much as possible during lunchtime, even in winter. The students do not go outside if ithere is heavy precipitation or if the wind chill is below zero. Parents are asked to dress children in appropriate outerwear for the weather conditions so students may comfortably take advantage of outside recreational play. Please put names on all outdoor clothing, including boots. Bring on the snow! ⛄
