Construction Update 11.6.15
Things are moving along with our construction project and continue to remain on schedule. This weekend, Com Ed will be transferring power to the new transformer that was installed on the east side of the building to replace the one that is in the area where our new gym will be located. As seen in the pictures below, grading work continues in the area between Greens Park and the school. A portion of this area will ultimately be used for water retention. Also, concrete foundations for our five new classrooms are beginning on the southwest side of the building. Exciting!

Penny Brigade
On Wednesday, October 28th the 5th-grade students worked together in a team building activity under the direction of Mrs. FitzPatrick and Ms. Davis. Students were divided into 14 groups of 12 students. Each group was given 1-minute to brainstorm strategies before the activity began. The goal: to transfer 8 pennies from one cup to another only using spoons. Students were not allowed to communicate once the activity began. We were so proud of how our students worked together to complete the task at hand.
Student Technology Conference
It's time for Students Involved with Technology Conference!
This year, the north campus will be at Deer Path Middle School in Lake Forest. It is a conference where kids come to hear each other present, win prizes, be with their kindred spirits and have a blast. Does everyone have to present? Absolutely not! 3rd-12th grade students can simply attend the conference to see what it is all about.
Goblins, Ghosts, and Princesses...Oh My!
On, Friday, October 30th the students and staff of Olive-Mary Stitt dressed up and paraded down Belmont Street to the delight of our OMS community. Parents, grandparents, neighbors, and even a few Thomas Middle School students cheered us on as we enjoyed the beautiful sunshine. After the parade our students enjoyed an afternoon of Halloween games, crafts, and treats provided by our amazing families. If you weren't able to attend, please enjoy our parade video!

Buddy Foundation Fundraiser
On Wednesday, November 4th, the Service Learning Club will host a fundraiser during both lunch shifts to raise money for the Buddy Foundation by selling student created crafts for $1.00 per item to interested students and staff. All items were designed and hand-made by Service Club fifth grade students over the last two weeks, both after school and during their lunch hours. The Buddy Foundation is a no-kill shelter in Arlington Heights that houses rescue dogs and cats who are looking for their forever home. 100% of all money collected will go directly to the Buddy Foundation to help buy food, beds and medicine for shelter animals.

Be a D25 PAL
As part of the district's ongoing effort to bring greater awareness to food allergies and to highlight the Be A PAL and Protect A Life from Food Allergies initiative, the district is providing every student with a teal-colored "Be a D25 PAL" bracelet. The bracelets will be distributed to all students on Wednesday, October 28th.
Dr. Bein sent the following letter to all families last week highlighting the different ways that students and families can be a D25 PAL to students with food allergies. As she notes in her letter, the Food Allergy & Research Education organization started the teal pumpkin project last year. The teal pumpkin project encourages families to display a teal painted pumpkin and provide non-food treats on Halloween. Every since then, teal has come to symbolize allergy awareness and supporting children with food allergies. We will be sharing information about how to be a D25 PAL and how to support the teal pumpkin project on Wednesday morning's announcements.
Open House in the LMC
The Library Media Center Staff would like to thank the Olive-Mary Stitt families who visited the LMC during Open House and sponsored new books for our library collection. Our total count of donated books was 102! Also, we had some students who won autographed copies of new books. The winners were as follows: Quinton B. of 2-1 won Iggy Peck Architect, Grant Fuller from 3-3 won Stallions by Starlight, and Faith S. from 4-2 won Jack, The True Story of Jack and the Beanstalk. Thank you to all of our families for your support! We will use your donations to purchase additional materials for our library.

Crossing at Arlington Heights Rd. & Olive St.
For those of you that take this route, you may be aware that the district has been working to refine crossing at this intersection due to the south Olive Street sidewalk being closed due to construction. The crossing guard supervisor and some district administrators have been out to view traffic in this area and determined the safest way to get everyone to and from school is to have families only cross Olive Street in the north crosswalk and only cross Arlington Heights Road in the west crosswalk. The crossing guard will only cross families in these two crosswalks so he can adequately supervise those that are crossing and those that are waiting. We are asking that families, even those with adult supervision, not cross in the other two crosswalks during arrival and dismissal as this can distract cars from paying attention to the crossing guard. We appreciate this means some families will need to slightly alter their routes to school, but it is just for this year and it ensures safety for all. We are already seeing that many families have figured out their new routes. Thank you for your continued cooperation and support of our construction project!

The Sound of Music Fills The Commons
The Olive Owl Concert Band has been working hard learning instrument assembly, good posture, and tone production. This week we are learning to play our first well-known song, Hot Cross Buns. In addition to their first song, we are discovering the correct way to start a note and learning all about half notes and quarter notes. We are working hard and having fun; it's a great time to be an Olive Owl!
Open House
Last night during Open House our OMS community celebrated the hard work of our students. The halls were lined with projects both artistic and academic. The evening was also filled with the voices of our 4th graders as they performed under the direction of Mrs. Privett. Halloween 2015 A to Z
To help you get ready for this fun-filled day, we offer the following Halloween A to Z:
AM Kindergarten Halloween Plans
Kindergarten teachers will send out Halloween information via email to all families. AM Kindergarten students should be dressed in their costumes when they arrive at school. As a reminder, parents of AM Kindergarten students are welcome to congregate in the Commons beginning at 9:05 am for the AM Kindergarten parade. AM Classroom Room Reps. and Party Volunteers may begin decorating classrooms at 10 AM while the students visit other classrooms. Only parents on the volunteer list that have a visitor’s badge will be allowed to leave the Commons to help in the classroom. Volunteers – please make sure you leave plenty of time to pick up your visitor’s badge in the main office before you head down to the classroom.
Classroom Room Reps and Party Volunteers
Just like last year, you may arrive anytime after 12:15 PM to begin setting up for the classroom parties. Please make sure that you leave yourself plenty of time to pick up your visitor’s badge in the front entryway before you head down to the classroom. We will have pre-printed badges for all volunteers that have previously had their licenses scanned. If you have not yet had your license scanned, our office staff will do this when you arrive. Only individuals that are on the volunteer list and have a visitor’s badge will be allowed access classrooms. We appreciate all that you have done to plan for a great day!
Costumes
Please help your child choose a costume responsibly, understanding that we wish to promote safety while having fun. Please be sure that students do not bring weapons (real or fake) to school or wear costumes that include blood or depict violence. Please also exercise caution in selecting a mask, as students will not be able to wear them during the parties and may be asked to remove them if they make walking in the parade unsafe.
Lunch
Your child should have brought home a Halloween lunch permission slip today. Please indicate your child’s plans and return the form to your child’s classroom teacher by October 23rd.
Students that will be going home for lunch on this day will be dismissed from the front doors at 12:10 PM. They may then return at 1:05 PM and will line up outside the kindergarten door (PM kindergarten), in the gym (1st & 2nd grade), and in the commons (3rd-5th grade)
Students that stay at school for lunch will have an opportunity eat and then change into their costumes at 12:40 PM. Food service will offer only the Zip Line lunch bag for lunch on Friday, October 30th due to the low Halloween participation. Two Zip Line choices will be available: a Yogurt or a Turkey/Ham & Cheese Wrap.The Smart Snack line will also be open.
Parade (Indoor)
If it rains/snows or the temperatures are too cold, we will parade inside the Commons of our school. Parents of PM kindergarten, 1st & 2nd-grade students are welcome to congregate in the Commons to view the indoor parade, beginning at 1:30 PM. Parents of students in 3rd, 4th, & 5th grade are welcome to congregate in the Commons to view the indoor parade, beginning at 2:00 PM. Students in the first parade will enjoy their classroom parties immediately following their parade. Some classrooms in the second parade may begin their parties prior to the 2 PM parade and resume the festivities following the parade. We appreciate you understanding that we are not able to accommodate parents in the school prior to 1:30 PM, as our custodian will be cleaning the Commons after lunch. Also, so that every parent has an opportunity to see their child in the parade, we respectfully request that you only congregate in the Commons during your child’s parade.
Parade (Outdoor)
If the weather cooperates, we will have our annual parade through the neighborhood, beginning at 1:30 PM. We will exit the building through the front doors and head towards Thomas Middle School via the west side of Belmont Street. We will cross Belmont at Thomas Street and return to school via the east side of Belmont Street. In the event of rain, we will bring the parade indoors. If we have to move inside, an email will go out to families around 12:50 pm.
Party Food Policy
Classroom teachers will send a notice out to parents describing the “menu” for the party.
Per district policy, treat bags may not be sent home with students.
Safety & Supervision
We will have extra supervision in place on 10/30. We also ask that our parents be extra mindful of all safety procedures around our school on this day, as extra traffic, excited students, and rushed parents can result in a very dynamic parking lot. Thank you in advance for your respect of the dismissal procedures at lunch and at the end of the day.
Zero
The chance that it is going to rain on our parade! :)
