CAUTION: Drop Off/Pick Up Safety

We have recently received reports of safety concerns regarding students being dropped off and picked up from school.  Please pay extra attention to vehicles and children between 8:45 and 9:10 am and 3:35 and 3:55 pm.

Please make sure your child is entering/exiting the vehicle in our designated zone.  Students should be entering and exiting vehicles from the sidewalk and into the passenger side of the vehicle only. Students SHOULD NOT be getting into or out of vehicles along the yellow marked curve.

There have also been reports of vehicles stopped and/or parked in public crosswalks.  Cars that are trying to maneuver around these cars are unable to see adults and children that are trying to cross the street.

Also, students should NOT be picked up or dropped off directly in front of the building along Olive Street.  Please pull forward past the stop sign, past the first closed driveway, and allow your child to exit the vehicle in the designated drop off zone.

With your support, we can continue to keep all of our students, staff, and OMS families safe.

LMC - Chat and Chew

Third graders in the LMC Chat and Chew program were excited to talk with author, Wendy Mass, through Skype at the book discussion this week. The students had a chance to ask her lots of questions about the life of an author.  She told the students that she has fifth grade twins.  Her daughter helps her edit the books as she writes them. Ms. Mass told the students that she is currently working on a new book for her Twice Upon a Time series.  She explained that creating a book takes imagination and also time spent researching. Ms. Mass advised the students to be devoted readers if they hope to become authors some day.

Shoes, Shoes, Shoes

With the help of our Olive Owls and their families, we collected 286 pairs of shoes!  On April 26th, the service learning club spent their lunch recess helping to sort and bag the shoes collected for delivery on May 1st to Share Your Soles warehouse in Chicago.  Way to go Owls for giving a hoot about others!

Arbor Day

On Friday, April 28th the Village/Park District of Arlington Heights hosted an Arbor Day Celebration and Tree planting ceremony at Greens Park.  Our Ecology Club members were invited to recite a poem and sing a song as part of the celebration.  A big thank you to all of the Ecology Club students and their leaders Mrs. Schuch and Mrs. Roura for preparing the students for their performance.  If you missed it please click on the links below.

Hunger Doesn't Take a Summer Vacation

Students will be coming home with a brown bag for our annual OMS Character Counts Food Drive. Donations can be brought to classrooms Monday, May 8th through Friday, May 12th. This food drive project helps students understand the ‘Character Counts’ pillars of Caring and Citizenship. Working together, we raise awareness about the issue of hunger and inspire empathy for those facing it. As a collaborative school community with responsible students, we see this as an important opportunity to help others.

Summer is a critical time for the food pantry, because donations drop dramatically during summer. Your generosity will help to sustain the 471 families that depend on the food pantry this summer. The pantry is in need of all types of non-perishable foods. Click here for Pantry needs. Please no glass bottles or jars!

PLEASE NOTE: There will NOT be a human chain after school (5/12) this year! The third and fourth graders will load bags onto the truck during morning recess. This change is at the request of the Township, so that they have ample time to receive donations and get them into the pantry.

We thank the fifth grade Service Learning Club for helping with tagging the bags, delivering bags to classrooms and maintaining the incoming donations.

We would like to invite you to celebrate a great year at OMS following the meeting at Jimmy D's.  Please contact  Lisa Roudabush  or Kelly Gabrione with any questions.

OMS Recognized by Keep America Beautiful, DC

On Arbor Day, Keep America Beautiful featured Olive Mary Stitt and its Plastic Film Drive initiated by the Ecology Club last fall. In the weeks leading up to America Recycles Day, OMS students collected bagel bags, dry cleaning bags, plastic shopping bags, packing pillows and shrink wrap from paper towels, water bottles and tissue packs. All of this material was then taken to Jewel on Rand Rd for transfer, meltdown and reuse. Many families continue to collect this material at home and bring it to Jewel, Target, Trader Joe's and Best Buy for proper recycling. Great job OMS families!

Final Ecology Club Meeting - Mon, May 8th after school until 4:45pm

May is a busy month but we have to stop...to plant a tree! Join us on Monday for a tree planting lesson with the Village of Arlington Heights Forestry Division. We also plan to "herb it up" and host our end-of-the-year award ceremony for all of our active members. Hope you can attend! Contact Judi Schuch with any questions.

Thanks for Sharing your Soles

Character Counts & the Ecology Club would like to thank all the Olive families and staff that donated to the shoe drive. The 5th grade Service Learning Club demonstrated fantastic teamwork as they sorted, counted and bagged shoes. Updated total: 872 shoes were donated! A Hoot goes out to Katie Murray who donated her time to deliver those shoes to the "Share your Soles" Warehouse on Monday.  Click here to see photos.
