    Parent-Teacher Conferences Spring 2018

    OMS PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCES SPRING 2018
Thursday, March 22 and Friday, March 23, 2018

At Olive-Mary Stitt Elementary School, we value a strong partnership between home and school. Twice a year, once in November and once in March, time is provided for you to meet with your child’s teacher for Parent-Teacher Conferences. Spring conferences are a great opportunity to receive information about current academic progress; however, it is not a time to discuss placement for next year. Details regarding how parents may share information for consideration in our placement process will be shared later in the spring.

Parents will be able to register for conferences online, using http://www.signupgenius.com. Directions and links to begin registering for conferences will be shared via email on Monday, 3/5/18, at 10 am. The window for registering for spring conferences will be Monday, 3/5/18 at 10 am through Monday, 3/19/18 at 10 am.

The conferences are scheduled in 20-minute increments. In order to be fair and equitable to all our OMS families, each family may register for only one evening conference per year. Families may choose to register for an evening conference in the fall or spring, not both.

4th/5th Grade Parents: The conference times are for meeting with your child’s homeroom teacher. If your child has a different teacher for math and you have specific math questions, please email him or her.

Please remember that these two days are set aside for the purpose of conferences, not as vacation days. If you will be out of town during the conference days, please consider contacting your child’s teacher to arrange a phone, Google Hangout, FaceTime, or Skype meeting during a regular conference time slot.

We hope you take advantage of this opportunity to meet with your child's teacher on March 22nd or March 23rd. Let's work together to make this a great, last trimester for your child!

    Snow Day by Ms. Davis

One set of footsteps in the snow,
Ms. Davis said to school she would go.

The doors were locked the lights were dim,
The teachers and students were sleeping in.

The weatherman said the snow would fall,
Who knew it would be this big of a squall!

Dr. Bein wanted to make sure everyone was safe,
So she canceled school just in case.

What to do on this snow-covered day,
The children will certainly head into the snow to play.

Snow angels, snowballs, and forts galore,
Or curling up with a good book like folklore.

Olive Us hope you stay warm and have fun,
On Monday we plan to see everyone!

    Happy Snow Day!

    Global Play Day

On Thursday, Feb. 8th many classes participated in Global Play Day, a day set aside to promote students having unstructured time to interact, be creative, unplug, and just have some fun.  For more information about Global Play Day please click here.

    Second Graders Celebrate Culture Day!

Second graders became world travelers on Wednesday, Feb. 7th as they “visited” five different countries with their classmates to share and learn together. The students carried personal passports with them as they joined a new team of five with a member from each class. Within each team, there was a child who specialized in information about one of these five countries: Greece, India, Australia, Brazil, and Kenya. Prior to this day, the students had researched life for children in those countries during lessons in the library media center. They worked with a partner to create a “Day in the Life” of a child video to show what life would be like for a typical child. On the Culture Day, the students shared their slideshows with each other and earned a flag stamp after “visiting” each country. After sharing, the students collaborated with their new teams to participate in a quiz show game of Kahoot about the five countries. Finally, they designed postcards to demonstrate what they had learned. It was a fun day of sharing and learning from each other!

    Morning Drop Off

Recently we have noticed an increase in the number children exiting vehicles along the curve.  This area is not a safe area for students to exit vehicles as indicated by the yellow paint and safety cones.  When students exit vehicles in this area it also increases traffic congestion.  We have also seen students exiting from the driver's side of the vehicle and adults getting out of cars to assist them.  Another concern is students that are standing between vehicles to get backpacks and/or band instruments out of the trunk.  We appreciate that it is a very busy and hectic time of day, however, the procedures we have in place have been carefully planned to ensure safety and efficiency for everyone.

    Please help us by:
Having your child exit the vehicle along the straight away only.
Remain in your car and have your child exit from the passenger side only.
If children need to get something out of the trunk, please park your vehicle in our lot or at the church.

Thank you for helping to keep Olive our Owls safe.

    Peter Reynolds Visit

AUTHOR/ILLUSTRATOR, PETER REYNOLDS, TEACHES OMS STUDENTS TO EXPRESS CREATIVITY AND MAKE THEIR MARKS!

Author/Illustrator Peter Reynolds introduced Kindergarten, First, and Second-grade students to his new book called The Word Collector. He shared a huge copy of the book using his computer and the projector and screen. First grader, Lillian M., even had a chance to play the role of Vashti, the main character in The Dot as Mr. Reynolds read aloud to the audience.  Sharing his own history, Mr. Reynolds told of how he developed a love of creating stories in middle school. He was challenged and supported by a middle school math teacher to create videos to teach math concepts. Peter Reynolds encouraged students to create both art and writing pieces. He was excited to learn that some students planned to create storybooks of their own.

In the week leading up to the author visit, students learned about Mr. Reynolds' books during LMC and classroom lessons. They rotated to different stations to listen to his books, create artwork modeled after his watercolors and drawings, and built designs with large foam blocks.

Below are a few pictures of students working at centers in the LMC.

    Blue Ribbon Assembly

As some of you may be aware, the district video camera that was going to capture footage of our assembly failed to do so. Thanks to members of our audience, we collected as many photos and clips as we could and put them together in the following video so you at least have a small window into the fun we had. The first few photos are from our Blue Ribbon Team's visit to Washington, D.C. for the awards ceremony.
