The LMC staff was pleased to announce the results of the Nonfiction November contest.  Every class competed by reading nonfiction books, finding interesting facts to share from the books, and writing those onto forms. Fifth Place:  5-3 who read 164 books

Third Place:  1-3 who read 188 books
Second Place:  1-2 who read 197 books

Nonfiction November

The library media center has kicked off a special contest for the month of November.  All students are encouraged to read nonfiction books to help their classroom win the contest.  The class who reads the most nonfiction books during the month will earn a special reward of free time in the computer lab as well as recognition as the winning class.  In order to participate, students should select a nonfiction book and read the whole book.  Then, they should select an interesting or juicy fact to share.  They can pick up a colored book form in their classroom or in the LMC.  On the form, there is a place to write the fact.  The LMC will collect all of the forms and tally them to determine the winning class.  Updates of how many forms per class have been submitted is shared through a visual display in the hallway outside the LMC.  Students may work on their forms in school and at home.  They may select any nonfiction book from any source as long as the book is at their reading level.  Parents are encouraged to help Kindergartners and first graders write their facts. Good luck to all of the classes, and happy reading and learning!

JESIE Chinese Delegation Visits OMS

Principals from Jiangsu Province in China visited with students and staff at OMS on Thursday. October Important Dates

Open House
Our Open House is scheduled for Thursday, October 24, 6:30 - 8:00 PM. With your child as your guide, you and your family are invited to our classrooms to learn about the dynamic learning experiences that abound at OMS. The format of the evening is truly an open house, so feel free to join us anytime between 6:30 - 8:00 PM. This is a wonderful opportunity for your child to showcase his or her outstanding efforts so far this year. If you stop by our Library Media Center (LMC), you can help build our library collection by donating a book. Use the following link to learn more.

Library Media Center Open House

Once again, our 4th grade students will be delighting us with a musical performance. Please stop by the Commons at 7:00 PM (4-1 Muhr, 4-3 DeMille & 4-5 Christoforou) and 7:30 PM (4-2 Edstrom & 4-4 Grimm) to share in this musical celebration!

Hallowee
Our Halloween celebrations will be on Thursday, October 31st . Students that will be going home for lunch on this day will be dismissed from the back doors, by the Commons, at 12:10 PM. They may then return at 1:05 PM to their morning line-up locations. Students that stay at school for lunch will have an opportunity to change into their costumes at 12:50 PM. A lunch permission slip was sent home on Wednesday, October 16th. Please indicate on this permission slip if your child will be going home or staying at school for lunch. Permission slips are due back at school no later than Monday, October 28th.

Please help your child choose a costume responsibly, understanding that we wish to promote safety while having fun. Please be sure that students do not bring weapons (real or fake) to school or wear costumes that include blood or depict violence. Please also exercise caution in selecting a mask, as students will not be able to wear them during the parties and may be asked to remove them if they make walking in the parade unsafe.

If the weather cooperates, we will have our annual parade through the neighborhood, beginning at 1:30 PM. The parade route is as follows: Students exit OMS front doors and follow Olive Street sidewalk toward Greens Park, south on Douglas, west on Oakton, north on Belmont, then back to OMS through our playground area. Our kindergarten classes will be proudly leading the parade, followed by 1st through 5th grade students. Class parties will begin at the conclusion of the parade. If the weather decides to rain on our parade, we will move the fun indoors to the Commons. In this case, students in our first lunch session (1st, 5th, 3-1 Yarbrough/Parker, 3-3 Stevens, & 3-5 Range) will parade around the Commons beginning at 1:30 PM. Students in our second lunch session (2nd, 4th, 3-2 Molnar, & 3-4 Helmann) will be a part of a costume parade beginning at 2:00 PM. Parents are welcome to congregate in the Commons to view these indoor parades, beginning at 1:30 PM.

We will have extra supervision in place on Thursday, 10/31. We also ask that our parents be extra vigilant in all safety procedures around our school on this day, as extra traffic, excited students, and rushed parents can result in a very dynamic parking lot. Thank you in advance for your respect of the dismissal procedures at lunch and at the end of the day. We want to make sure that all of our superheros, princesses, etc. have a safe and fun-filled day!

We are looking forward to a boo-tiful afternoon!

5th Grade Team Building with the Principals!

We had a wonderful time today playing Curmudgeons as our 5th grade students worked together to cross "Curmudgeon River!"  We are so proud of the way our students worked together to get each classmate across the river.  It is clear that they give a HOOT and know how to make good choices and do their best.  Thank you 5th grade teachers for sharing your students with us today!
