Attendance Reminder

District 25, recognizes the impact of regular school attendance on educational performance.  It is also important that the students have a good start to their day by arriving on-time.  The truancy process is begun when a student has been absent or tardy for more than 5% of school days.  We greatly appreciate your efforts in getting your children to school on time and here on days they are healthy.

Lunch Shift Change - Monday, Jan. 29th

Monday, January 29th will be our official lunch shift change day. Students that had lunch at 12:10 PM for the first half of the year will eat at 12:40 PM and go out for recess first. Students that had lunch at 12:40 PM will eat at 12:10 PM and go out for recess afterward. We are looking forward to this change and the opportunity for our students to experience the lunch period from a new perspective.  Students will continue to sit with their class at their assigned lunch tables.

Health Reminder

With flu season in full swing we want to share a reminder from our school nurses regarding  symptoms and when your child should stay home from school.  Thank you for your help in keeping all of our Owls as healthy as possible.

January in Illinois is not exactly the best place to be but we've learned to make (frozen) lemonade of lemons! The Orbit Roller Skating night had everyone out on the rink. The cool tunes and great company were perfect. Thank you to our PTA Chairs, Nina Shamoon and Kristi Spina, who managed a flawless event even while dealing with houses full of sick kids. We appreciate your hard work! The OMS exclusive movie showing on Monday, January 22 brought over 100 people to see Paddington 2. Liz McDonnell knows exactly how to spend a fun morning off school. Thanks for planning!

Valentine's Day

Classroom Valentine's Day parties will be held on Wednesday, February 14.  If your child is passing out Valentine's Day cards to other students, the cards cannot have any candy or food attached to them. Items such as pencils, erasers, stickers, etc. are great alternatives as long as they are not edible. Goodie bags filled with treats or candy are also not permitted. PTA room reps. and classroom teachers will be sending out additional information about the parties soon. We greatly appreciate our room reps. and all of our volunteers who organize and provide fun Valentine's Day experiences for our students.

Student Technology Conference

If creating movies, coding, working with robots, website design, video production, or constructing your own computer is a passion for one of your children, The Students Involved with Technology Conference is a perfect opportunity for them to come learn with like-minded students. The S.I.T. Conference is a student-focused conference run by students for students. Students present to their 3rd through 12th-grade peers on their passions, hear from a student keynote speaker, participate in hands-on design challenges, experiment with STEM.

This all-day event is being hosted at Westgate Elementary School on February 10th, 2018.  Snacks, lunch and prizes are included with the $30.00 registration fee. Check out past conference highlights here.

Author Peter Reynolds Will Visit OMS

Olive is honored to host award-winning author and illustrator, Peter Reynolds on Friday, February 2 for students in Kindergarten, First and Second Grades. Mr. Reynolds is best known for his books The Dot, Ish, and North Star. He will introduce to us his new book, The Word Collector at the assembly.

Here is a quote by Peter Reynolds to explain his mission, “When I visit students in schools they ask me what my hobbies are. I say thinking, dreaming. If my art and stories can help inspire others to do the same, I'll feel my life had meaning.”

If any families would like to order personalized autographed books by Mr. Reynolds, please print and return an order form to the library media center by Tuesday, Jan. 30. Follow this link to the LMC website to find the order form. Paper copies of order forms will also be available in the library for students to bring home.

2018-2019 Calendar

Can you believe we are already looking ahead to the next school year?  Please take a moment to review the 2018-2019 school year.  The official first day for students is August 21st, 2018!

Heelys Shoes, Toys, and Fidgets

We were excited to welcome back our OMS owls and hear all about their break from school.  We also heard and saw some new items start to show up at school.

Due to safety concerns, shoes with wheels are not allowed at school.  Also, students should continue to keep all toys and fidgets at home.  With new presents comes the temptation to show classmates and friends.  Please remind your child that these items should stay at home.

Thank you for your help!
