Author Visit

Blue Balliett, author of six books for young readers, visited OMS on Thursday.  In her presentation, she explained to the third, fourth, and fifth graders, that she likes to write about things that she is curious about or wonders about.  Students were especially interested in her description of her new novel, Pieces and Players, that tells the story of a very sensational art theft in which 13 items were stolen from a museum. Her fiction novel was based on a true art theft that took place 25 years ago.  A group of 17 students had a chance to personally meet with Mrs. Balliett before the school presentation.  They earned the opportunity by reading one of her books and writing a question for the author.  In that more personal setting, those students asked Mrs. Balliett their questions and learned a little more about her writing process.

The LMC still has copies of Mrs. Balliett's autographed books for sale. They will be available until Thursday, April 30.  Order forms can be picked up in the LMC or downloaded from this link on the blog.

MAKE A CHANGE FOR LOCAL TORNADO VICTIMS

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS SCHOOL DISTRICT 25
JOINS TOGETHER TO

“MAKE A CHANGE
FOR LOCAL TORNADO VICTIMS”

As you may be aware, 11 tornadoes were confirmed across Illinois on April 9th.  Six of the tornadoes across north central Illinois formed from one supercell thunderstorm. This included a strong tornado that was a long track EF-4 with maximum winds of 200 mph. This tornado began near Franklin Grove (Lee County), through the northwest side of Rochelle (Ogle County), across I-39, through Fairdale (DeKalb County), and ending south of Belvidere (far southern Boone County).  This tornado caused two fatalities in Fairdale, and a total of 22 injuries.  Many families lost their homes and were left to rebuild. All of this devastation took place just 60 miles from Arlington Heights!

Many of us watched with disbelief on that day and even the days that followed. We may have wondered if there was something we could do.   Well, there is.  Let’s all join together to “MAKE A CHANGE FOR LOCAL TORNADO VICTIMS.”

From April 27th - May 1st, Arlington Heights School District 25 will be collecting change to donate to our neighbors to the west.  Each day, students will have the opportunity to bring in change that will be collected for the week and then given to the McCormick Foundation who will see that 100% of the donations go to these victims.  We ask that children only bring in money collected from family members.  AHSD 25 never endorses children going door to door.

We hope that you will join us, as we join together to “MAKE A CHANGE FOR LOCAL TORNADO VICTIMS.”

Making Connections Across the Curriculum: Classroom, Library Media Center and Art Class

Through the study of world biomes (rain forests, tundra, temperate forests, and deserts) OMS third graders learned which animals live in these biomes and how those animals use adaptations to survive.  Students had a chance to learn about the biomes both in the classroom and through a research project in the library media center.  Using their research facts, students became biome animal experts and designed new morphed animals that could survive in their biomes.  To create the morphed animals, third graders combined body parts from two different animals, like the head of a wolf and the body of a squirrel.  They took their ideas to art class with Mr. Demarco to draw realistic pictures of their animals to which they added textures and detailed biome backgrounds.  The final step in the project will be to link a video explaining the animal’s adaptations to their completed artwork.
