Poem In Your Pocket Day Blog Post

The entire OMS population celebrated Poem In Your Pocket Day sponsored by the LMC on Thursday, April 26. Every student carried several copies of a favorite poem written by either a published poet or the student himself/herself. During designated trading times during the day, announcements were made to encourage students to share their poems. Grade level classes took the opportunity to meet with other classes to exchange and share their poems with other students and teachers.

At lunch, students were entertained by Julie Jurgens, the children’s librarian at Arlington Heights Memorial Library. Ms. Jurgens recited poems and sang Down By the Bay with the accompaniment of her guitar. She invited students to come up with new words for the song that would challenge Ms. Jurgens to create rhyming verses. Some OMS student volunteers even came to the stage to read their poems to the entire lunchroom. Students saw poems all around on this special day. Several students in the CAP program helped Mrs. Brown write poems on the sidewalks and playground to entertain the student body.
