P/T Conferences and Spring Break

Thank you to all of the families that participated in parent/teacher conferences.  We value this time to talk with you about your child's progress.  We can't believe that is is almost April and the end of the school year is creeping up on us.  Once we return from Spring Break, teachers and students will be busy as we shift into high gear.  We hope you take time to relax this week and that your children return to us excited and ready to get back to learning!

Placement 18-19 Parent Feedback

At OMS, the student placement process for the upcoming school year is taken very seriously. Each spring, our teachers engage in a collaborative process to create healthy learning groups. We work together to ensure balance in a wide variety of areas including: heterogeneously grouped students or students of varying abilities, students with special needs or concerns, social/behavior patterns of students, gender, the number of students assigned per room, learning styles of the students, peer relations, classroom structure, and the instructional styles of the receiving teacher. We ask that you trust our teaching staff in this process.

However, if you feel there is information that would not otherwise be considered in our student placement process, you will find an OPTIONAL form that you may fill out below. Please know that the placement process for all OMS students is extensive and considers many factors. Please do not name teachers on this form as we cannot honor specific requests. We appreciate your understanding and support.

This deadline for completing this form is Thursday, April 12, 2018.

Hip-Hip Hooray - Sports Day

Student Council has planned a spirit day.

Thursday, March 15th will be Sports Day at OMS! Please encourage your children to wear a favorite jersey, hat, team colors or any other sports apparel. Students may want to represent the local team they play on, a siblings high-school team, college team or national team!  All sporting equipment should remain at home.  We are looking forward to seeing a variety of teams represented!

Friendly Math Competition

Looking for a way to motivate your children to fit in some Front Row math practice? Front Row is holding a March Madness competition where the winning school gets rewarded with a pizza party. This is a fun opportunity for OMS to jump into this competition and have our own mini-competition at Olive. The competition will start next week on Monday, March 12 and will be announced to students on the morning announcements. It will end Friday, April 6

The winning class each week will be the class who answers the most questions for the week both in school and at home. That class will be announced on Friday's morning announcements, will get bragging rights for the week, and will get to hang on to JT (the Front Row pig mascot) for the week!

Log in HERE!

Our Lost & Found Runneth Over!

Please check for items in our lost & found when you join us for parent-teacher conferences on March 22nd & 23rd. The items will be displayed in our commons. Any items not claimed by the 23rd will be donated to charity.

It’s Tournament Time!

Many of you may be counting the days and hours until the men’s and women’s NCAA college basketball tournaments begin next week. In the LMC, excitement is building for our 2018 Tournament of Books! Sixteen books are competing to be the student favorite in the primary bracket (grades K through 2), and sixteen books are competing to be the top choice in the intermediate bracket (grades 3 through 5). Students will decide which books move on to the next round by voting for their favorites either during their LMC lesson times or in their classrooms. Voting is done on computers or iPads from a link on the library website. Round one voting will take place next week. If students aren’t familiar with some of the books, they may be interested in checking out the books from the LMC. To learn more about the tournament, please visit the LMC website Tournament of Books page by following the link below. Students can download and print a copy of the brackets from this page.

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

The game of Chess is basically a boot camp for the brain. Among other things, studies have shown it can raise a player's IQ and elementary school students who play often score higher on reading tests. OMS is lucky to have it's own Chess Club and we're looking for two co-chairs to make sure it continues! So if you are looking for a brain workout, here is your opportunity! Contact olivepta@gmail.com for more information.

One of the most fun nights of the school year for many students is each grade level's activity night. A big thank you to co-chairs Christina Perez and Kris Persons for bringing in entertaining and educational performers for all of our students.
The Box Top fundraiser is complete for the year and with the help of chair Gina Groberski, our PTA raised a lot of money by just collecting box tops. Thanks for leading the charge, Gina! Never too early to start clipping for the fall!
