When I Grow Up!

Last Friday was a Student Council sponsored school spirit day - When I Grow Up! We had a variety of very professional looking students, everything from doctors, to singers, to police officers, to athletes, to teachers. The future looks bright!

Technology Fair 2014

Olive students did a great job presenting their cool tech ideas and projects at the District 25 Teachnology Fair hosted at Thomas Middle School.  Special thanks to Mrs. Brown and Mrs. Seisser for their support to make this evening a great experience for our students!

Just Move It Challenge 2014

Registration is now open for the Just Move It Challenge 2014 that will happen on Saturday, April 12, 2014. The Arlington Heights Council of PTAs and the ABC/25 Foundation invite runners and walkers of ALL ages and abilities to participate in this fundraising event that combines fitness and fun for the entire family!  Please invite your friends, family and neighbors to this wonderful event as you move to raise money for education.  Thanks to the past support of our community and local businesses last year, we were able to raise $18,000 that will benefit the teachers and students of District 25.  We had over 1000 participants in attendance representing 9 schools in which over 500 of the runners being students.

Please note that ALL proceeds go to the Scholarship and Grant Fund, benefiting the education of School District 25 students through PTA scholarships and the ABC/25 Foundation grant selection.

The race will be at South Middle School, 400 S. Highland Avenue, Arlington Heights, Il, 60005

Head Lice Information

In the last four months, we have had only one family report to us that their children had head lice. While lice seem to be an ongoing concern within the community, they are not currently a problem at school.  An informative and fun way to review the facts about head lice with your children can be found on www.brainpopjr.com. Supply Bags for Angel Oak Elementary

Service Learning Club completed a project for Angel Oak Elementary School in Johns Island South Carolina. Also home of the Owls! Dr. & Mrs. Musich will be delivering these supply bags to students there during the month of March.

ISAT 2014

The 2014 Illinois Standards Achievement Test (ISAT) will be administered to all 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students beginning Monday, March 3, 2014 through Friday, March 14, 2014. The ISAT measures individual student achievement relative to the Illinois Learning Standards. The following are a few actions you can take as a parent to ensure a positive testing situation for your child:

• Make sure your child attends school on the days of testing, unless he/she is ill. This minimizes the need for make-up exams or disruption to the regular school day. Your child is most comfortable testing with his/her class. The State requires all students to complete all sections of the assessment.  

• Make sure your child gets a good night’s sleep the night before testing.

• Make sure your child eats a good breakfast on the morning of each test day.

• Make an effort to help your child feel relaxed. Adhering to a schedule that allows plenty of time for daily routines helps your child not to feel rushed.

• Remind your child to read the test directions carefully and ask questions of teachers if the directions are unclear. 

• Encourage your child to double-check and triple-check his/her work; use paper and pencil to show the work in mathematics.

• Give your child words of encouragement to let him/her know that you have confidence in his/her ability to do his/her best!

Coffee & Conversation With the Principals

Mrs. FitzPatrick & Mrs. Perri will be hosting the next informal coffee meeting for parents on Friday, February 21, at 9:30 -10:30 AM. The topic for this coffee is Relational Aggression in Girls: Is My Daughter in Danger of Becoming a Mean Girl? The meeting will begin with an open Q & A period, followed by the presentation. While many adults have heard of and learned to expect girls experiencing relational aggression during adolescence, some behaviors have become more common at the elementary level. What is "typical" behavior, and what are some of the red flags that may indicate a more serious issue?

Valentine's Day Parties

Winter Weather Reminders

Please be sure your children are equipped for outside recess.  Hat, gloves, snow pants, and boots are essential in this cold weather. If students do not have snow pants and boots, they may only play on the blacktop. Also, with the snow and ice, please be extra cautious when driving and walking in the parking lot and the surrounding school grounds. Drive SLOWLY and keep an eye out for the children!
