OMS Summer Office Hours 2018

The OMS office will be open tomorrow and Thursday, 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. and Friday, 8 a.m. - noon. The office will reopen on Friday, August 3rd, 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. If you plan to stop by during the lunch hour, please call ahead of time as our office staff typically takes their lunch around 12:00 p.m. - 1:00 p.m.

As we reflect on the past school year, we are reminded of all the ways in which OMS is such a wonderful community. Thank you to our families for volunteering countless hours and for celebrating our students by attending our events including concerts, PTA activities, classroom parties, field day, and the last day of school send-off for our 5th grade students. Thank you to our staff for your dedication to all of our students. Last, but certainly not least, thank you to our students for making OMS such a wonderful place to learn and grow. During your time away from the nest this summer, we hope you take time to enjoy family and friends.

5th Grade Film Festival

Let’s celebrate our budding film producers here at Olive! All of our fifth graders participated in the District 25 Film Festival. Fifth graders across the district have been working hard this past month to create book trailers to advertise their favorite books.  They have been finding photos, writing text, and matching music to the theme of their books. Once the trailers were finished, they were submitted to the judges. The first step was to get chosen by the fifth graders at another school. Our partner school was Dryden. The fifth graders at Dryden chose the top 3 from each Olive class.  The winning video in each fifth-grade class was sent to the district office where a team of administrators watched the videos and chose the winning trailer to represent each building.  Congratulations to our building winner Dara Z. from 5-1 for her trailer on A Night Divided.

Summer Reading

We hope that all of our OMS students will find great books to read over the summer! The librarians of District 25 have partnered with the Arlington Heights Public Library to put together a summer reading program that includes lists of recommended books for students in each grade level. We encourage our students to sign up for the AHML program. If they do, they can also participate in our own OMS summer reading challenge. Keep reading to learn about that challenge.

Ms. Jurgens from AHML visited OMS on Monday and told students about the AHML summer reading program. She also read aloud a book titled, The Hello, Goodbye Window illustrated by Chris Raschka, the AHML artist-in-residence for the summer. We would love for our students to create their own hello, goodbye windows to display at OMS in August. A letter and window template were sent home with students earlier this week to explain the program. Students are invited to decorate their windows. Here are some ideas for decorating the windows:

Draw or print a picture of who lives inside your house. Don’t forget your pets!

Draw the cover of a favorite book you read this summer. 

Draw or take a photo of a favorite activity that you do inside your house. 

Another idea would be to draw what magical things you see when you look out your window.

Summer Keyboarding Challenge

It's time for the 4th Annual District Summer Keyboarding Challenge! 

All the elementary schools will be competing for the coveted Golden Keyboard currently held by Ivy Hill.

Last Day of School Information 2018

June 8th, 2018 will be our last day of school for the 2017-2018 year.  Where did the time go?  We like to celebrate the amazing year we have had with a number of fun activities.  On the last day of school students will attend an end of year assembly and may participate in extended recess, a rousing game of all-school bingo presented on Olive-TV, and signing of yearbooks or autograph sheets (generously purchased for all students by the PTA).

At the end the day, we will send off our 5th-grade students in style with a human tunnel. This has become a tradition at OMS, and we are hoping parents can join us! At approximately 3:35 pm we will dismiss our 5th-grade students through a human tunnel of kindergarten through 4th-grade students. The tunnel will be set up beginning near the front doors and wrapping around to the playground.

In the map below, you will see the route of the tunnel, along with an area for parents to watch, and grade level reunification areas.
