Excess Funds Suggestions?

At this time of year, the PTA collects suggestions from the parent, teacher and school administration on how to spend our potential excess funds. Although we try and budget accordingly, there may be a chance our PTA fundraisers are more successful than we anticipate and we have extra money to spend. Since the PTA is a non profit organization we must close our fiscal year with a zero balance. Click Here to submit your suggestions through our online form. Please have your requests submitted by April 24th.

If available, please provide documentation of the exact amount your suggestion would cost and where we can purchase it.  An Excess Funds committee led by the PTA treasurer will evaluate the suggestions and vote on which ones to move forward with.  This will be reported and voted on at the last PTA meeting on May 11th.  Thank you for your support!

Many thanks to all of the OMS families and teachers that took the time to support this worthy cause. Together we raised two hundred dollars, which will help educate eight students for a year. What a fantastic way to be global thinkers with big caring hearts! Thanks to our Character Counts Co-Chairs, Christine Gilbert and Rachael Hooker, for organizing this event.

Science Club wraps up its 10th year!

With our new space, the science club was able to use a classroom this year instead of the hallway!  Mrs. House, her volunteers, and science club members enjoyed having ample space for their projects and experiments.  Their projects included topics such as parachutes and floating, forensic investigating, generating electricity using wind turbines...and that is just a few of the topics they covered.

Pencils, Crayons, Markers! Look what's happening in the art room!

Olive-Mary Stitt will host two authors in the same day!

Students in grade 3 through 5 will welcome author/illustrator Peter Brown on Monday, April 10 at 11:00.  Peter has written and illustrated many New York Times’ best selling children’s books such as Wild Robot, Creepy Carrots, and Children Make Terrible Pets.   Currently, classroom teachers in these three grades are reading aloud some of Wild Robot, Peter’s first novel. So far, the students love hearing about the adventures of Roz, the robot who must adapt to her new home on an island full of animals.

Our younger students in grades K, 1, and 2 will also welcome an author on Monday, April 10 in the afternoon.  They will celebrate animals and poetry with Newbery Award-winning author, Kwame Alexander.  He will share his book Animal Ark: Celebrating Our Wild World in Poetry and Pictures. Mr. Alexander wrote the poetry to match the beautiful nature photography created by National Geographic photographer, Joel Sartore.

If students are interested in purchasing books by these authors, the LMC will provide order forms.  Paper copies of the forms will be sent home soon.  You may print your own copy of the order forms by visiting the Author Visits page on the LMC website.

Cultural Arts Co-Chair Needed

Do you want to get more involved in the PTA but don't know how?  Maybe you want to be on a committee, but aren't exactly sure what they are about.  We can help!  Each week we will highlight a different committee in need of volunteers in order to give you a deeper understanding of the position and the time commitment it requires.  This week we are focusing on the Cultural Arts Committee.

The Cultural Arts Committee aims to enhance our students educational experience and cultural understanding through the performing arts. With teacher input, we plan professional drama, music, and dance performances. Typically shows occur during the school day and the committee strives to present two different assemblies each school year. Past performances have included The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by GreatWorks Theatre company, Trinity Irish Dancers, traditional Japanese drums provided by Tsukasa Taiko, an ensemble from the Elgin Symphony Orchestra, Mandala Arts South Asian dance, The Tales of Olympus by American Eagle Productions and Honest Abe by Face To Face Productions.  Make an impact on our kids through the arts! Contact olivepta@gmail.com to learn more.

Other open Committee Chair positions are: Yearbook Co-Chairs. Click here to view the descriptions of committees on our PTA website.
