You may have noticed new red benches on our Main and West playgrounds. These benches have a very special purpose, they are called "Buddy Benches". "The buddy bench is a simple idea to eliminate loneliness and foster friendship on the playground." Mrs. FitzPatrick and Ms. Davis taught the students the meaning of the buddy bench during lunch. Please take a moment to watch the video below created by our own Olive Owls with the help of Mrs. Siesser and Mrs. Watanuki.

Poem In Your Pocket Day
The entire OMS population celebrated Poem In Your Pocket Day sponsored by the LMC on Thursday, April 27. Every student carried several copies of a favorite poem written by either a published poet or the student himself/herself. During designated trading times during the day, announcements were made to encourage students to share their poems. Grade level classes took the opportunity to meet with other classes to exchange and share their poems.
At lunch, students were entertained by Julie Jurgens, the children’s librarian at Arlington Heights Memorial Library. Ms. Jurgens recited some poetry and encouraged students to share theirs with a bigger audience as well. She invited students up to the stage to read aloud the poems in their pockets.

Assistant Principal for 1/2 Day
On Monday, April 17th, Mr. Andrew experienced what it is like to be an Assistant Principal. He started his day welcoming students exiting their vehicles in the loading zone. He then made an appearance on morning announcements reminding students to take their time and do their best on MAP testing this week. It was a busy morning, boxing up materials for UPS and calling UPS to pick them up. Later, it was off to read to our kindergarteners and have an extra special recess with his 4th-grade class. Before lunch recess, Mr. Andrew completed a field inspection and determined it was too soggy to open the far field. He also dropped some extra HOOT tickets off to Mrs. Grimm's class and caught a first grader exceeding expectations and awarded a HOOT ticket! During lunch, Mr. Andrew joined Ms. Davis in addressing the student council members and the letter they previously submitted with ideas for improving OMS. Finally, it was time to enjoy a working lunch with a few of his friends in Ms. Davis' office.

Two Authors Visit OMS on the Same Day!
Students in grades 3 through 5 welcomed author/illustrator Peter Brown on Monday, April 10. Peter has written and illustrated many New York Times’ best selling children’s books such as Wild Robot, Creepy Carrots, and Children Make Terrible Pets. Students were excited to meet him since many of them had enjoyed hearing the read aloud of Wild Robot. The students loved hearing about the adventures of Roz, the robot who had to adapt to her new home on an island full of animals. Mr. Brown explained how he came up with the idea for his novel, researched information about robots and animals, and created the art work to accompany the words in the book. Mr. Brown even created a Roz drawing for our students!
The OMS library media center was a bustling place on the afternoon of April 10. Kwame Alexander got the students in grades K, 1, and 2 chanting after him to repeat lines from one of his picture books. He also read some of the poems from his book, Animal Ark. The students were especially excited to hear about Mr. Alexander's poetry since they had written their own animal haiku poems during library lessons the week before his visit. Mr. Alexander enjoyed viewing the children's work. Musical accompaniment was provided by a guitar-playing, Mr. Randy.
Unsigned copies of Animal Ark by Kwame Alexander may still be purchased through the LMC until Thursday, April 20. Electronic copies of the order form are available on the LMC website. This book of poetry is inspiring all of us to get excited about our up-coming Poem-In-Your Pocket Day on April 27!
