Poem in Your Pocket
Local poet, Bill Buczinsky, kept us all in rhythm. We shared some poems throughout the day. A couple of drums and a smooth beat, now we're all poets! Thank you to the PTA for sponsoring his visit! WGN News showed up to check out the action. There will likely be a feature story next week. We'll keep you posted on the air date.
Assistant Principal for 1/2 Day
Assistant Principal Owen had a very busy morning on Wednesday, April 27. He began his day around 8:45 by welcoming students and families in the drop off zone. He was asked by Mrs. FitzPatrick to inspect the school elevator which was found to be in working order. Owen also conducted classroom observations, inspected the playlot and playground for safety concerns, and assisted with removing the letters from the OMS sign out front. By noon, he was ready to become a first grader again!

Welcome to our New Nurse
We recently welcomed a new nurse to OMS. Mary-Beth Lorentzen is with us on Monday's and Friday's. Mrs. Lorentzen previously worked at Northwest Community Hospital. She has always wanted to try school nursing and when the opportunity arose she jumped at the chance to join District 25. When asked how she likes her new job she said she is loving it!

Variety Show
Our 4th & 5th grade students amazed us with their talents on Thursday night. We are so proud of the many hours of practice that went into preparing for the show. Thank you to Mrs. Dunlop, Mrs. Watanuki, & Mrs. Mueller for sponsoring the show!
Construction Video Highlights
The following video provides aerial footage of the construction projects at OMS and Ivy Hill. Over the past few weeks, the roofs over the new gym and classrooms were completed. Windows are currently being installed. Ceiling tiles, ceramic floor tiles, and interior plumbing are next on the docket.
We have seen quite a bit of action in our fields as work continues on the water detention basin. A detention basin is a low-lying area designed to briefly hold a set amount of water while slowly draining to another location. After a significant amount of rainfall, the basin may detain water but empty shortly afterwards. A water detention basin is not designed to retain water all the time, nor is it designed to attract wildlife. The addition of the new gym and classrooms causes water displacement in these areas. The water detention basin ensures this does not result in the flooding of our fields, which has been an issue in the past. Currently, stone is being added to the basin, which will then be covered with a few feet of soil.
Most importantly, the project continues to remain on schedule!
