Get Tagged - Summer Reading Program at OMS

Students can earn a special Summer Reading Rocks guitar tag to add to their carabiner if they read five books over the summer.  Two of the books must be ones from the special District 25 librarians' list of recommended books (listed in the brochure or found on the OMS homepage under summer reading) and three can be the students' free choice selections.  They need to fill out the back of the brochure where it asks for titles and authors of the five books.  Then, they should return this form to the LMC in the fall to receive their special guitar tag.

Internet Safety Lessons from LMC

-->
During LMC, the fifth graders learned about Internet Safety by completing an online training module from the website called Budd:e.  Then, they worked in groups to create presentations using the online tool Prezi.  Their presentations were created for the purpose of teaching third graders about Internet Safety topics.  Some of the topics that they presented included choosing safe usernames and passwords,  identifying scams and spam, protecting computers against viruses, identifying secure websites, deciding what photos should be kept private or could be shared on the web, learning about copyright laws , and more.  Each fifth grade class then presented the Prezis to a third grade classroom.  The third graders were pretested and post-tested on their knowledge of Internet Safety.  Their knowledge greatly increased as a result of viewing the presentations!  For example, before the presentation, only 41% of third graders knew how to protect their computers from viruses, yet afterwards,  76% knew how.  Before the presentation only 50% could pick out an example of the safest username, but afterwards 93% could do so.  After the presentation, 92% of third graders could write a safe password.
