OMS Honors Military Veterans
This week our students took a few minutes out of their lunch recess to sign giant cards honoring veterans as part of our Character Counts initiative. On Friday, Mrs. FitzPatrick welcomed students and their family members on morning announcements to thank them for their service to our country. Here are just a few pictures from the event.
Updated Arrival Procedures for Students
We are so excited to be settling into our new spaces! Now that we have a few weeks behind us we would like to tweak our morning arrival procedures to give our students more structure for beginning their day at school. Beginning Monday, Oct. 3rd, 2016 students will begin lining up by grade level at their assigned doorway.
At the front doors (door 1) 1st, 3rd, and 4th will line up by the three brick columns. We will have signs taped up indicating which grade level is standing by which column. A staff member will open the doors at 8:55 when the bell rings* and direct the grade levels to enter the building.
At the kindergarten hallway doors (door 7) 2nd and 5th grade will line up behind marked lines on the cement. All kindergarten students, both am and pm, will also begin lining up at door 7 instead of at their classroom doors. Lines will be marked for each kindergarten class and the kindergarten teachers will come outside at 8:55am or 12:45pm to pick up their line.
Classroom teachers were asked to review the new routines with their classes on Friday in preparation for Monday. I have attached videos below that help to explain our new procedures.
We continue to remind students that the playground equipment is closed in the morning before school and would appreciate it if you would also remind your children to walk directly to their new lines when they arrive.

Celebrating Our Owls
On Tuesday, September 27th Mrs. FitzPatrick and Ms. Davis joined our Hoot Drawing winners for lunch and a special activity to celebrate making good choices. These students earned Hoot Tickets from staff members for following our Hoot Expectations of Hooray for good choices, Our job is learning, Only kindness, and Take time to do your best. After lunch students participated in a team-building activity.

Curmudgeon River
This afternoon Mrs. FitzPatrick and Ms. Davis led our OMS 5th graders in a team building activity. Small groups of students had to work together to get from a sinking island to the mainland. All they had were a few enchanted lily pads to help them cross the Curmudgeon River! Dodging sharks, biting fish, water snakes and the curmudgeons (Mrs. FitzPatrick and Ms. Davis) we are happy to report all of our 5th graders made it safely to the mainland!
Pick-Up and Drop-Off Reminders
Just a few reminders for Pick-Up and Drop-Off
When turning right into the parking lot from Olive street please take turns with those cars trying to turn left. While we don't have an official stop sign we are hoping families will treat this busy intersection as an unofficial 3 way stop.
Please make sure all children are entering and exiting vehicles from the straight-away drop-off zone only. The curve is marked in yellow and has cones set up - this is not a safe area for students to enter/exit vehicles.

A Letter from Dr. Bein Regarding Halloween Parties
Dear Elementary School Parents:
One of the wonderful things about Arlington Heights School District 25 is the partnership between staff and parents. Together, we create amazing experiences for our students!
Two of the upcoming, traditional events we have in AHSD25 are our elementary school parades and classroom-based celebrations for Halloween. We are excited to see our students dressed up in their favorite costumes and excited to celebrate with them! This year, food will not be served during classroom celebrations. Please do not send any food items to school for distribution to students. Our Halloween parades and classroom parties will focus on the fun of celebrating together through holiday games and crafts and activities.
Halloween classroom parties will be on Monday, October 31, 2016. Following our classroom parties, the Village of Arlington Heights hosts Trick or Treat hours from 3:00 pm – 7:00 pm.
Please do thank our teachers, principals, and our PTA room parents for their work in creating fun, engaging Halloween events for our students! I know our students are going to have a great time!
I encourage you to also join the Village of Arlington Heights in Trunk or Treat on Friday, October 28th from 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm at the Public Works building. This is a great event where our students can collect some Halloween goodies from local businesses and Arlington Heights organizations in a safe, indoor environment.

Fitness Gram Program News
Dear Parents and Guardians:
As a part of your child’s Physical Education program, their class will be participating in the FitnessGram® assessment which measures health-related fitness for youth.
The FitnessGram health-related fitness assessment offers multiple tests to measure aerobic capacity, muscular strength and endurance, and flexibility. We ask that you encourage your child to participate with his/her best effort and to the best of their ability. The FitnessGram assessment provides a measure of good health as opposed to athletic ability. Students will be assessed using the following test items:
- One-Mile Run (Grades 4-8)
- Push-Up (Grades 3-8)
- Curl-Up (Grades 3-8)
- Back-Saver Sit and Reach (Grades 3-8)
*Students in Kindergarten through 2nd grade may participate in these activities in order to practice the skills involved.
A FitnessGram report will be provided for each student to take home. This report will include your child’s scores and information about whether or not they achieved the FitnessGram Healthy Fitness Zone®. The Healthy Fitness Zone is a research-based standard that represents the level of fitness needed for good health. The information on this private report will not be displayed or made public. For more information regarding the FitnessGram assessment, please refer to www.FitnessGram.net.
Additionally, all districts in Illinois are required to report the number of students that meet the FitnessGram Healthy Fitness Zone® and the number of students that are identified as Needs Improvement in grades 5 and 7 each year. Individual student scores are not reported to the state and are not made public. Student scores will never be used as a grade, but rather as data to help students set personal fitness goals.

Walk to School Day is Coming Soon!
Wednesday, October 5th is International Walk to School Day. This event aims to encourage healthier habits, bring awareness to the environment, and promote safe routes to school. We hope many OMS families will join us on this day as well as consider this a preferred option for getting to and from school, weather permitting, throughout the school year. OMS teachers and staff will walk with students along each of these routes. Join us on one of the following walk-to-school routes! Starting time and place is indicated.
*In case of inclement weather, we will send a SchoolMessenger email around 8am indicating the event will be rescheduled to the rain date of Oct. 6th.
